Mexican Guacamole Recipe, Easy & Authentic

Hello my friends!

So we are back to work, to school, to our normal life… What if I sent you back on holiday just for a bit?

There you go with the genuine Mexican guacamole!

A Taste of Mexico: My Yucatán Adventure

It’s a part of my holidays that I love: bringing back recipes, ingredients, or food ideas. For those who were nice enough to follow me on Instagram or Facebook last August, you already know that I went to Mexico, and more precisely to the Yucatán peninsula.

I will have more opportunities to share about this trip through other recipes. However, I wanted to focus on the famous guacamole that you most likely enjoy very often as an appetizer.

Guacamole: Not as Spicy as You Think!

I have to say that I was convinced guacamole had to be spicy. I thought Mexican food was always made with chili peppers and bold spices. Well, guess what? I was wrong!!

That was a surprise! The first order of genuine Mexican guacamole in a restaurant: not spicy. Okay… The second order: not spicy. Well… By the 10th, I finally got it!! 😉

Obviously, I had to share that with you! And even more so since the recipe is super easy to make and super quick. In fact, I had the chance to watch it being made at my table, and it took less than 2 minutes once the ingredients were ready!!

Serving Guacamole with Style

Besides, it gives me the opportunity to show you the famous Talavera ceramics, typical of the city of Puebla. With such beautiful colors, your guacamole is already better!!

You will serve your guacamole with the traditional nachos, or with bread, blinis, or savory crackers.

A bit of history…

Guacamole is one of Mexico’s most iconic dishes, loved around the world for its creamy texture and fresh flavor. However, its origins date back much further than many people realize, reaching into the history of ancient Mesoamerican civilizations.

The word « guacamole » comes from the Nahuatl language spoken by the Aztecs. It is derived from ahuacamolli, a combination of ahuacatl, meaning avocado, and molli, meaning sauce. The literal translation is therefore « avocado sauce. »

Long before the arrival of Europeans in the Americas, avocados were already being cultivated in present-day Mexico and Central America. Archaeological evidence suggests that avocados have been consumed for more than 7,000 years. The Aztecs highly valued the fruit for its rich texture, nutritional qualities, and versatility in cooking.

The earliest versions of guacamole were extremely simple. Imagine that the Aztecs would just mash ripe avocados and combine them with ingredients such as tomatoes, chili peppers, and salt. The mixture was prepared using a molcajete, a traditional stone mortar and pestle still used in Mexican kitchens today.

When Spanish explorers arrived in the sixteenth century, they discovered avocados and the avocado-based sauces prepared by local populations. As trade expanded, knowledge of these ingredients gradually spread beyond Mexico’s borders.

More recently…

Over the centuries, guacamole evolved while remaining faithful to its roots. Today, traditional Mexican guacamole is often made with avocados, lime juice, onions, cilantro, tomatoes, and chili peppers. Numerous regional and international variations also exist, incorporating ingredients such as garlic, mango, pomegranate, or even grilled corn.

Despite these modern interpretations, guacamole remains deeply connected to its ancient origins. More than just a dip, it represents a culinary tradition that has been passed down through generations and continues to showcase the richness of Mexican culture and gastronomy.
